Chelsea and Manchester City would have 14 days to sign Tottenham defender Toby Aldeweireld for £25m if Spurs opt to trigger their option to extend the Belgian international’s contract, according to the Sun.

The Sun journalist Mike McGrath cites Football Leaks as the source for this particular detail of the release clause. Tottenham are unlikely to trigger the contract extension though unless the player heads into the final year of his contract in 2019 without signing a new deal.

Spurs would likely attempt to sell ahead of that time if the 28 year old has no intention of staying at the London club. The player’s agent Stijn Francis has said that his client “deserves” a better contract, prompting speculation about the centre back’s future.

The Sun reported at the weekend that Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has targeted Alderweireld as a potential replacement for his countryman Vincent Kompany whose injury problems are causing the Spanish manager major headaches.

Alderweireld has been ever-present at the back for Spurs over the past two seasons, playing 92 matches in all competitions, and helping the club to two top four finishes.
