Manchester United put up a decent fight during Tuesday night’s UEFA Super Cup but they were ultimately outclassed by a superior team.
Real Madrid secured a 2-1 victory thanks to goals either side of half-time from Casemiro and Isco, while Romelu Lukaku netted a consolation with just under half-hour left to play.

The result means that United boss Jose Mourinho has still never beaten Madrid, his former employers, in a competitive match. Of the five games he’s managed against Los Blancos, his teams have lost four and drawn one.
The Portuguese coach, however, was pleased with the effort his players showed over the course of the 90 minutes.
“I’m so happy to be the manager of these guys,” Mourinho told reporters after the match. “I told them I have never liked a group like I like them.”

A lovely touch.
In his post match press conference, Mourinho was asked why he gave his medal away.
“Sometimes when I win I don’t keep the medals. So imagine when I lose,” he told reporters, per Man Utd’s official Twitter account.
“For me, the medal would go to some place in my house but for that kid it’s something he’s going to keep and remember.
“It was a little kid with a Man United shirt, I have no idea where he comes from. So I think, for the kid it’s something that he’ll never forget.
“For me medals, I repeat, when I win they don’t mean much. Imagine when I lose…”
