Jose Mourinho has made a final call on his fourth summer signing

Thursday, 17 August 2017

Jose Mourinho is one of few managers in world football who regularly get what they want in the transfer market.

The Special One has overseen the signing of more than £1 billion worth of players across stints at Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Manchester United.

Mourinho has spent in excess of £310 million since arriving at Old Trafford last summer including the marquee captures of Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku.

The glittering United squad are expected to at least challenge for the Premier League while progressing deep into the Champions League knockout stages.

Mourinho must surely be close to satisfied with his team at this stage – though anything is possible with the August 31 deadline still some way off.

The Portuguese tactician is under significant pressure to compete on all four fronts after a £165 million splurge on three players was only enough to finish sixth in the league last season.

United already invested nearly £160 million this summer to bring in Lukaku from Everton, Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic and Victor Lindelof of Benfica.

Mourinho has recently made it clear to vice-chairman Ed Woodward that he needs one more addition before his squad is fit to dominate England and Europe.

FAILED TRANSFER TARGETS

With that in mind, the 54-year-old seems to believe a top-class wide player is the final piece required to complete his Red Devils puzzle.

The summer window has been peppered with reports claiming United are working to sign Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan or Real Madrid superstar Gareth Bale.

However, none of their pursuits have shown any signs of coming to fruition as yet.

Mourinho has previously expressed frustration at similar failings – but this dead end has prompted a different response.

ESPN claims the United manager is ready to end his involvement in this window and delay his next signing until January in order to avoid disturbing the chemistry among the current group.

United will need a big squad to cope with midweek matches further into the season, and knowing he would need to sell at least one senior player to fund any further additions in the next fortnight, Mourinho is ready to back out of the market.

The Red Devils have slashed their wage bill by £500,000-a-week after offloading Wayne Rooney to Everton and Zlatan Ibrahimovic – a particularly significant figure when coupled with their activity last January.

Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay brought £50 million into the Old Trafford bank account and they could have been joined on the departures list in recent weeks.

The likes of Chris Smalling, Anthony Martial, Matteo Darmian and Marouane Fellaini have all drawn interest, but Mourinho appears reluctant to let them go for the time being.
