Johnstone spent six months of last season on loan with the Claret and Blues where he made a total of 22 appearances and gained eight clean sheets throughout his time at Villa Park.

The 24-year-old will return to Villa Park to play under Steve Bruce’s leadership as they enter the race for promotion to the top flight.

The club confirmed the announcement on their official Twitter account and said that the United keeper was “all signed up”.
The keeper will join the squad for pre-season training and will meet fellow new recruit John Terry as he moved to Villa as a free agent after 22 years with Chelsea.

Johnstone made the move up to the United team from the academy in 2011 and has spent most of his time on loan with clubs such as Preston, Doncaster Rovers and Yeovil Town.

The newest recruit was quoted on Aston Villa’s official website, where he said that he was incredibly happy to be back at Villa Park because of the fans and fellow team mates.

He told the club: “I am delighted to be back.

“I really enjoyed my last spell here – it’s a great club with top players and passionate fans.

“I believe it can be a special season for all of us and I will be working hard each and every day to produce the kind of performances that will help us achieve what we’re aiming for.”
