Jose Mourinho admits he made a mistake with Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Jose Mourinho has hinted a breakdown in communications contributed to Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s slow start to his Manchester United career.

The former Borussia Dortmund playmaker joined last summer in a £30million deal but was largely frozen out of United’s side for the first five months of the campaign.

Mkhitaryan has worked hard to earn Mourinho’s trust and has now become an integral part of United’s new-look attack. The 28-year-old has already contributed four assists this term and appears to have formed a devastating understanding with the club’s record purchase Romelu Lukaku.

‘I think Henrikh understands me, and to be honest, I understand him,’ said Mourinho.

‘In the beginning of last season if he understands me better, he would have started better.

‘But at the same time, if I understood him better, I would probably have helped him in a faster way than I did.

But we spent our time together, working together, learning each other.

‘The second part of last season was good for him and I believe with his talent that this season is going to be even better.’
