The number 7 shirt has taken on almost mythical status at Manchester United over the years. From (occasionally) George Best to Bryan Robson to Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo, it is a shirt that has generally represented the main superstar in the team - a player who can make the difference and get fans off their seats.
In recent seasons that shine has dulled slightly as the likes of Michael Owen, Antonio Valencia and Memphis Depay have worn the famous number. No disrespect to any of those names - particularly Valencia who is much loved at the club - but they are hardly the most glamorous of players. United fans are gagging for someone worthy of the honour.
So when Manchester United's official club Twitter account hinted at a 'No.7' announcement, there was much initial excitement at what it could mean. Was it signifying not only a new signing, but world-class star deserving of the celebrated number? Was someone from within being announced as the new incumbent? Exciting hopeful Andreas Pereira perhaps?
No. It was for the rebranding of the hospitality matchday experience at Old Trafford...
As you can imagine, disappointed United fans made their feelings to the club very clear...
