For years, the Blues have regularly recruited young players for fairly small fees, before sending them away on loan in order to aid their development.
For the club, this has two main benefits. Either it produces a new player for the first team, as with Thibaut Courtois and Nathan Ake, or it allows Chelsea to sell the player whilst making a generous profit.
One such player that has been involved in the loan system over the last couple of years is Christian Atsu, and the former Porto has taken the latter path – with Chelsea today confirming on their official website that he has joined Newcastle on a permanent deal.
Atsu, of course, spent the 2016/17 season on loan with the Magpies, impressing under Rafael Benitez as the club stormed back into the Premier League, and he has seemingly impressed the Spanish manager enough to warrant a permanent acquisition.
For his part, the Ghanian has really impressed over the last year or so. A poor couple of loans, to Everton and Bournemouth respectively, left many in the pub fearing the worst – but he really bounced back for Malaga and subsequently Newcastle – leaving our landlord confident that he will be able to secure a long and prosperous career in the Premier League moving forward.
Having played for 5 different clubs since moving to Stamford Bridge, a return to his parent club was beginning to seem unlikely, and this announcement confirms that.
