Diego Costa transfer to China takes another twist

Tuesday, 23 May 2017

Chelsea striker Diego Costa was widely expected to seal a mega-money move to Chinese club Tianjin Quanjian next month, yet it appears the club in question are not about to break the bank to sign any star players imminently.

A statement released by Tianjin Quanjian has confirmed that the club has not held talks over the transfer of Costa in recent months, after their initial attempts to sign the Spain striker failed to reach a conclusion in January.

Costa was keen to make the move that would have guaranteed him a reported £650,000-a-week salary, with his desire to go not affected by the damage his exit could have done to Chelsea’s Premier League title hopes.

The expectation was that Costa had been given permission to leave Chelsea so long as he stayed until the end of the season, but Tianjin Quanjian have now released a press release that appears to end their interest in the 28-year-old.

“For the past six months, our club have not involved in any form of communication and negotiation with Diego Costa nor his representatives,” read the statement.

“Our club will draw up a rational transfer plan as an aim to improve the spectator experience of the Chinese Super League and meet its sustainability demands.

“We won’t take part in any unhealthy competition, thus preventing all overpriced signings.”

Costa has again been linked with a return his former club Atletico Madrid in recent weeks, with the possible departure of Antoine Griezmann to Manchester United opening the door for a move back to Spain for the striker who joined Chelsea in the summer of 2014.

Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette is also in talks over a move to Atletico Madrid, with Costa also making no secret of his desire to return to Atletico to work under the guidance of his old coach Diego Simeone.
