Antonio Conte has asked Chelsea’s board to sign Juventus centre-back Leonardo Bonucci, according to reports in Italy.

Il Messaggero claim that Conte’s request has been accepted by Chelsea’s hierarchy, who have offered a £7 million-a-year contract to the Italy international.

But Chelsea’s biggest hurdle remains the task of agreeing a fee with Juventus, as the Serie A champions have already rejected offers in excess of £44 million, according to the report.

Bonucci, meanwhile, is happy to stay in Turin where his family is settled.

Conte had targeted a move for Bonucci last summer but Chelsea were unable to agree a fee with Juventus.

Bonucci and Conte worked together for three years at Juventus and the defender was an integral part of Italy’s national side when the Chelsea manager was in charge.

The 30-year-old is also wanted by Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, who have already signed Bernardo Silva from Monaco and are now targeting players who will bolster their defence.

In December, Bonucci signed a new contract which keeps him tied to Juventus until 2021.
